The Golden Mile
Villa Campolieto
The city of Herculaneum was for a long time a holiday resort for the Neapolitan aristocracy who built many villas there during the 18th century.
The location favored for these villas was later named the Golden Mile.
In Ercolano you can therefore admire 21 Vesuvian villas which were built by the most famous architects of the 18th century such as Luigi Vanvitelli, Ferdinando Fuga and others.
The best known of the villas is the so-called Villa Favorita,
where the wedding party of Queen Maria Carolina of Austria with
King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon took place.
The beautiful Villa Campolieto is still used today for notable events such as concerts and theatrical performances.
The other villas host public offices, hotels and private families.
