Padula
Chartehouse (SA) was the first building to be declared Italian national
monument in1882. It
is one of the largest abbeys in Europe ( 51,000 sq m), with its gardens
and orchards reaching 250,000 sqm.
Dedicated to San Lorenzo, the complex was built in 1306, in accordance to the rules of the chartusian order. It includes the rooms where monks used to live, which are arranged around numerous cloisters and the living areas surrounding the church.
Worthy of note are the huge apartment of the prior overlooking the beautiful garden and the great cloister which is accessed by a beautiful elliptical staircase.
We will visit the Church with its two choirs, the kitchen with the large hood flue of the furnace, the apartment of the Prior, the library with a beautiful tiled floor, the great cloister considered to be the largest in Europe.
The visit of the Abbey can be combined with one of the following tours: the excavations of Paestum, Velia , Grottos of Palinuro ( only during the summer ), Pertosa Caves , Caves of Castelcivita, city of Salerno
